REVIEW: ‘The Lego Movie,’ 10 Years Later

“The Lego Movie” (PG)  turns 10 years old this year and it still holds up as an all-time classic and inspiration for future films to come.

The worldwide box office hit, “The Lego Movie,” reaches a decade old, and with it, the legacy to the industry it leaves behind. The film stars the voices of actors Chris Pratt, Will Ferrel, Will Arnett, and many more.

Emmet (Pratt), is an ordinary Lego figurine who always follows the rules, is mistakenly identified as the Special after getting a strange piece stuck onto his back.

Emmet then finds himself recruited into a special team of strangers who are on a mission to stop an evil tyrant’s  Ferrell) plans to conquer the world. Emmet, however, is comically unprepared for the task but will use his special skills and abilities and give it his all to defeat the evil and save the world.

Released in 2014 by Warner Bros. and created by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller , ”The Lego Movie”  would turn into an overnight success. The movie grossed over $468 million worldwide, with $257 million coming from the United States and Canada. The film would continue to inspire the creation of other successful movies such as “The Lego Batman Movie,” “The Lego Ninjago Movie,” and “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.”All of these movies would go on to gross over $120 million, with “The Lego Batman Movie” becoming the most successful, grossing over $300 million.

This movie went on to be the inspiration behind more lego movies, including my favorite of this group, the Lego Batman Movie. This film tells a Batman story all done in Lego and takes a comedic tone on the relationship between Batman and the Joker. It’s a movie millions of others across the world have seen and for good reason, it, as well as the original Lego Movie, are just that good.

I was a big fan of “The Lego Movie” when it first came out and 10 years later, that opinion has not changed. It’s a very good relatable story of a nobody becoming somebody, making new friends along the way.

It’s a simple yet effective story and this movie nails it out of the park. My favorite character is Bad Cop voiced by Liam Neeson. I love his comedic yet serious tone on the character as he does one of his classic Neeson voice overs.

One of the best things about this movie was that it took an idea millions wanted to see and make it a reality. To take Lego and make it into a movie. The animation is smooth yet almost choppy but done purposely to simulate how Lego people would move. They don’t move like regular people, so the animators got creative with how they expressed themselves. Especially with their faces and hand movements.

It truly was a masterpiece for its time and inspired a whole new generation of Lego fans. It sparked the creation for not just more Lego-style movies, but at home animation, Lego brick building, all and anything Lego. Its cultural and cinematic impact on the world will forever live on in the hearts of all Lego fans alike.
