For the past nine years, Frederick Community College has had Hip-Hop Appreciation Week during the spring, with a number of conversations and events.
Hip-Hop Appreciation Week has been organized by professor Shemica Sheppard, who teaches for FCC’s English Department, and had English Professor Ramon Jones and Geography Professor Corwin Parker in attendance on Wednesday for a “Guess that Song” competition. Professor Sheppard’s team took the win.
Hip-Hop Appreciation Week took place April 30 to May 2 and is a time to celebrate hip-hop and its contributions to society, according to Sheppard.
Over the two day event, there was a lecture about hip-hip, free food, a DJ and free haircuts.
The Mosaic Center was packed with students for the event. Kara Olsen, 20, of Frederick said her favorite part is the free food. And she said she really liked how open FCC is with all these kinds of events.
Zander Bacorn, 19, from Myersville was one student in attendance that took part in the free haircuts. He said he liked his haircut and said the food was good, too.
The only complaint from many attendees, including those we interviewed was that the music was way too loud
Andrew Monyak, 19, from Frederick, said his favorite part was the music, but said was “a bit too loud.”
This seemed to be a common complaint at this event, as some students were seen stepping outside to take a break from the noise.
Other than the noise complaints, the event was well received. But both he and Olsen both complained.
