FREDERICK, MD. — Frederick Community College is rolling out a series of security updates and safety technology enhancements for the Fall 2026 semester, including expanded coverage by armed police officers, body-worn cameras, and round-the-clock safety patrols.
The security updates, detailed in a Sept. 2, 2026 campus-wide greeting by Chief of Campus Police and Director of Public Safety Dr. Robin Shusko, aims to keep the campus safe, welcoming, and prepared for emergencies across all FCC facilities.
“Safety at FCC is a top priority,” Shusko said. “Community policing is at the heart of what we do, and preparedness is essential to a quick response.”
The security plan covers both the main campus and the Monroe Center. In her email, Shusko explained how the college is shifting its approach to safety. In the past, FCC relied mainly on unarmed public safety officers who handled building access and routine patrols.
Now, the department includes armed police officers who carry firearms and have full legal authority to make arrests during emergency calls.
Shusko noted that these upgrades are designed to keep classrooms safe so daily instruction and lab work can continue without interruption.
As part of the new safety plan, the college expanded security technology across several key areas. Upgraded digital cameras now provide continuous video coverage of campus buildings, walkways, and parking lots, while electronic access systems secure facility entrances around the clock.
Officers are also using body-worn cameras to document interactions during calls, and security hardware has been updated directly inside academic spaces. In addition, security personnel now maintain 24-hour patrols across both campus locations.
According to Shusko, campus police officers carry holstered firearms while on duty and can be identified by gold badges and “Campus Police” markings. She added that safety remains a shared responsibility across the entire campus community.
