The new Feminist Club on Frederick Community College’s campus is more than just equal rights for women. Members want equal rights for all humans.
The Feminist Club was founded this semester by 17-year-old Mya Murphy of Frederick, a second-semester FCC student and sociology major, and Professor Jill Schultz, professor of social science.
The club meets once a month, at a time and place on a monthly basis decided by Mya.
The definition of modern feminism, according to the International Women’s Development Agency, is equality among women, men, and all genders.
“It also goes into intersectionality, that no woman is better than the other, no man is better than the other, we are all the same,” Murphy said.” That’s what I want to explore in this club.”
According to “Developing Critical Consciousness and Social Justice Self-Efficacy: Lessons From Feminist Community Engagement Student Narratives.” by Professor Angela Clark-Taylor at the University of Redland, feminism “can transform community engagement,” such as moving away from previous status-quo-dominated conversations to changing power dynamics in learning.
Ewelina Adamczak, writer for Medium, also says that a feminist perspective can help us challenge objectivity, and take a closer look at who produces news and facts in today’s media, and how that dynamic of power influences us.
During club meetings, members look at current happenings in the news and media through a feminist’s perspective and deepen their knowledge of the topic in the process. They also discuss any advocacy they can do in the community. is discussed. The club also plans to do outreach with the community and other clubs, when able.
The club is currently looking for new members and welcomes everyone, regardless of background. You can find the next meeting time and join the club by emailing either Mya at [email protected] or Professor Schultz at [email protected].
“We’d be happy to have anyone come check us out,” Murphy said.
