As students prepare for their finals in the forthcoming week, many may feel stressed out or need a quiet place to focus on studying and working on their final projects.
That’s where this week’s event at the MOSAIC Center comes in. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 9 through Dec. 12, students will have the opportunity to head to the MOSAIC Center in the Student Center to focus on their work, study for their finals, and drink a variety of teas from around the world.
“Every event and program in the MOSAIC Center meets one or more of our goals meant to help us reach our strategic goals,” said Cody Rosenbarker, manager of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging here at FCC.
Rosenbarker said the MOSIAC Center has two specific goals they want to accomplish with this week’s event. Goal 3 relates to cultural competency, which is to “prepare students for an increasingly diverse community, workforce, and world.” Goal 4 relates to the Pillars of Prejudice, which is to “ensure a more welcoming and inclusive learning and workplace environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.”
Goal 3 has five subgoals meant to be accomplished. Goal 3a, which is “exploring individual cultural histories, biases, and views,” 3b, which tries to “analyze how cultures shape ideas and how people think,” 3c, which tries to “link ideas to larger questions of power and privilege,” 3d, which seeks to “develop skills to engage in diverse cultural contexts, and 3e, which seeks to “examine elements of a specific culture and show global interrelation.”
However, Rosenbarker explicitly stated that the event was only meant to reach subgoals 3a and 3e.
Rosenbarker added that the event was meant to reach 3a “because each tea comes with a small label showing the history/typical uses of each tea” and 3e “because no matter how different the teas are, tea is a commonality we have throughout the world.”
Students are, of course, allowed to come to the Center just to get some tea without having any need to study or focus on classwork.
“That happens quite often, and it’s designed for people to be able to do that. We understand that you may not have time to stay or just want to study somewhere else, but just taking a tea means you found what you needed from us,” he said.
Rosenbarker, however, encourages students to head to the MOSAIC Center if they need to study for finals.
“We typically organize events and programs throughout the year, but we realize that everyone is focused on finishing the semester and studying for finals,” he said, “So, instead of hosting an event that would take away from those goals, we try to meet student needs by providing a space for it.”
Students are allowed to come in at any time to the MOSAIC Center during the times mentioned above. The Mosaic Center is located at the Student Center on the Main Campus.
