It’s Just a Jump to the Left: FCC and MET stages ‘Rocky Horror’

The Maryland Ensemble Theater and Frederick Community College are doing the “Timewarp Again.” The groups will stage the cult classic “The Rocky Horror Show” 7 and 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, 7 p.m. Friday,Nov. 1, and 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2,

“The Rocky Horror Show” is a musical cult classic written by Richard O’Brien (who also played Riff Raff in the original movie).  The show follows sweethearts Brad and Janet who wander into a castle after their car gets a flat tire. There, they meet a collection of characters, including the owner, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, who is creating Rocky.

Director Tad Janes, also is a theater and liberal arts professor at FCC and a producing artistic director at the MET. He is excited about the amount of audience engagement in the show.

This show is so unique, I can’t think of another show that has audience participation at the level that this show does,” he said.

For Virgins (or people who have never seen a “Rocky Horror” production, the audience talks back to the performance. Prop bags for audience members to participate with are available for sale at the concession stand.

Janes pointed out that “not only does the audience participate with props and sound effects, but there is a tradition of adding lines to the show. It’s a perfect Halloween show.”

According to Janes, seven FCC students join the cast from the MET as the characters Riff-Raff and a majority of the phantoms according to director Janes. Four students work on the tech crew.

Janes hopes everyone attending the show enjoys the music and silly concept.

Janes said there really is no other show like it.
