Students at Frederick Community College visited the Transfer-Scholarship Fair in the Student Center on last month for information about scholarship opportunities and four-year colleges to which they can transfer.
The next Transfer Fair will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Athletics Center.
Drew Mitchell, who works at FCC and helped organize the event, said the purpose of the Transfer-Scholarship Fair was for “getting people setup with scholarships and to help reduce debt for the next semester.” As many students at FCC prepare for the switch to a four-year university, they may find themselves unsure of where exactly to go to finish their degrees.
At the Transfer-Scholarship Fair, students were able to ask questions to representatives of many universities about scholarship opportunities and what they could do to apply to said universities. The universities represented at the fair included the University of Maryland, College Park, Bowie State University, UMD, and Eastern Shore, along with ROTC scholarships for Hood, McDaniel, and Mount St Mary’s, along with Phi Theta Kappa.
One such student, Charlie Wurster, 18, who is in their first year at FCC and is majoring in STEM, was “looking for scholarship opportunities when I transfer.” Wurster is not sure what exact college they plan on going to, and they mentioned that they weren’t looking for any specific scholarship at the moment.
“Honestly, I’m just here for the free stuff,” said Breanna Brea, 18, who is in her first year at FCC and is majoring in cybersecurity/national security. “You know, pens and all.”
Brea said she wanted to go to Georgetown University and plans on getting a scholarship her second year.
“It’s the dream.”
Randy Berkley, 21, is in his third year at FCC and is majoring in biotechnology. He said he was at the fair that day to “look at more opportunities for scholarships and see what I can apply for.”
Berkeley plans to attend the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Michael Flores, 19, is in his second year at FCC and like Wurster, is also majoring in STEM. Flores said he was there to “see the opportunities and cheaper than a four-year.”
Flores said during the fair he was “not here for any specific scholarships, just in general.” He said he hopes to attend UMD-College Park.
Alexi Funk, 18, is in her first year at FCC and studying general education.
She said she was at the fair that day because “I’d like to not pay for my college as much as I can.”
She said she would take “any scholarship from the Community Foundation.” She plans to attend UMB.
