“Play Ball!” The 2025 MLB Season Begins

The 2025 Major League Baseball season kicked off on March 27th. This marks the beginning of the 122nd season of Major League Baseball. Fans across the league have new hopes and expectations for their teams as they prepare for the 162-game campaign.

The Los Angeles Dodgers capped off the 2024 MLB season with a World Series championship victory over the New York Yankees, and have carried their dominance over into this season by winning their first eight consecutive games. Their offseason acquisitions of 2x Cy Young award-winning pitcher Blake Snell and top Japanese pitching prospect Roki Sasaki have put them at the top of MLB team power rankings across the board.

The New York Mets made a big offseason move of their own by signing 4x All-Star outfielder Juan Soto to a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million contract. With Soto coming off of a career year with the crosstown-rival Yankees, the move divided New York fans and has sparked some intensity in their long-tenured rivalry. The Mets started the season by dropping their opening series to the Houston Astros, but went on to win four of their next six games.

The Yankees opened their 2025 campaign with a three game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers that sparked some controversy. The “Bronx Bombers” hit a total of fifteen home runs in their first three games, some of which were barreled with innovative “torpedo bats” that were pioneered by the Yankees.

The torpedo bats were designed by an MIT physicist who found that adjusting the location of the greatest mass of wood several inches down from the end of the bat increases the ability of hitters to make strong contact. Yankee hitters found great success with these bats to start the season, and currently sport the league’s leading offense. Dozens of other teams have since put in orders for torpedo bats in an attempt to replicate the Yankees’ success.

The Baltimore Orioles came into the new season with hopes of getting back on track after a disappointing end to last season when they were swept in the playoffs by the Kansas City Royals. The O’s started the season 3-4, and struggled against their division rival Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox in their opening two series. Their star shortstop Gunnar Henderson, who began the season on the Injured List, was sorely missed in those losses.

In other league news, Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar was suspended for 80 games after testing positive for an illegal performance-enhancing substance. This added insult to injury to the already spiraling Braves who opened the season with seven straight losses.
