Returning to the Light after a year of Darkness?

Bungie’s “Destiny 2” (T) is a first-person Massively Multiplayer Online looter-shooter, that has had a storied 10 year run and has had a difficult year since the release of the Lightfall expansion, hitting some record lows during the games “Season of the Witch” in 2023. But in the biggest push Bungie has given the game in quite some time, the limelight is back on Destiny with the “Into the Light” event.

So is “Destiny 2: Into the Light” event worth playing? In a word, yes.

But there is a bit more to it than just yes and no, as the event only does some things to help with the games’ onboarding process. Ever since the advent of Sunsetting in 2020, a process where Bungie vaults paid content inside of the game, the onboarding process for this MMO looter shooter has been less than stellar. At this time Destiny 2 became “Free to Play” with a new opening called “New Light.” which is still a disaster of writing and gameplay.

So how does “Into the Light” improve “Destiny 2”’s poor introduction for new players? Well for starters, it lets them skip the “New Light” missions and get straight into the bulk of the content that the free version of the game has to offer, and this is further helped with the introduction of the new mode “Onslaught.” In this new mode players both new and old will team up to face off against hordes of enemies and defend a device called the “ADU”.

This new activity offers a lot of opportunities for teamwork and flashy gameplay and is free to play for all, even rewarding those who play it with weapons from the BRAVE arsenal.

These are reprised and iconic weapons from the games’ past, and they are some of the best within the entire game, allowing new players to catch up to the rest of the crowd faster. This activity is not without its flaws, however. The runtime of Onslaught cannot be understated; it runs long. The average “Onslaught” run will last about an hour, meaning that it leaves casual players with little time to do other activities inside of the game. Additionally, certain aspects of the activity can make certain character builds feel much weaker than they usually do, which can feel like a bit of a pigeonhole. These flaws by no means outshine the overall good that the new mode has brought to the game, but they are still important problems.

The event has also brought back exotic missions from the past. These are missions that offer a unique challenge and in return will reward players with powerful exotic weapons. These missions being available from the start for new players and returning to the game for old players to experience once again is an all-around positive change. The only real note that needs to be made here is that this is not new content, it is updated and returning content. So this is reused content, so returning players might not be super crazy about it.

Overall. what there is inside of this event has made “Destiny 2” a much more palatable experience for new players and returning players alike, and community sentiment has never been higher going “into The Final Shape, Destiny 2”’s next and possibly final expansion.
