I find Artificial-Intelligence to be an offense to humanity, both artistically and creatively. Within the last two years, AI text, image, video and voice generative models have exploded. AI-generated content taking over like this deeply disturbs me as I watch countless artists lose their work as people see AI as the new big thing.
AI’s use in both commercial and personal use has me worried if anyone ever truly cared about these art forms with how easily they’ve seemed to have replaced them. Knowing that AI art models steal from artists just proves how they’re attempting to replace what we already have. The human touch makes art what it is, it has an actual person behind it, and the genuine human soul and effort is what art is.
One of the biggest incidents I’ve seen recently was a Pink Floyd competition where contestants could submit their video for the 50th anniversary. Many beautiful hand-made animations won, however for one, an AI-submitted piece won. This piece won ten thousand dollars. Imagine you’ve poured your heart and soul, months of your time, lost countless hours of sleep, and when you check to see who won, it was someone who just put in a few prompts and did barely any work.
In other places, AI is being used for jobs at restaurants and fast food places, taking the role of taking orders in drive-throughs. Or even in the harder-to-notice examples, Duolingo, an app used to help learn a new language, has started to use AI for its translations in place of actual human translation. Freelance artists as well have repeatedly lost out on job opportunities and are told how much cheaper and easier to get results from AI can be.
This somewhat norm of using AI for jobs humans would do is a disturbing one that I’m hoping is simply a fad that will fizzle out over the years. And there’s hope already, as some places are realizing that AI is unable to properly adapt to criticism, that no matter how easy it is to enter a prompt and get a result, an actual human behind the drawing is much easier to make changes to the product, especially in terms of animation.
If anything, the bottom line is the way AI is just flat-out being used to replace certain jobs and people’s livelihoods. Never let the human soul be replaced by something as meaningless as AI.
