It is with an interesting mix of pride and fear that I announce my new role as Editor-in-Chief of The Commuter, Frederick Community College’s student newspaper. I’d like to take a little bit of time to introduce myself, and discuss precisely what my role is at The Commuter and how I plan to ensure that we provide a valuable news service to the FCC community and beyond.
First and foremost I’d like to introduce myself. I am a non-traditional student with a background in systems administration perusing an associate’s degree in Computer Science here at FCC. I’ve offered to leverage my technical skills to do the legwork on launching the new website; while also providing oversight for the publishing process during these first few issues when we’re still trying to get everything running well and documented.
I am also a strong believer in the importance of a free and uncensored press that serves its community instead of the interests of sponsors, related organizations or others who would use the press as a medium for personal advancement. I feel strongly that the free spread of information is one of humanity’s greatest strengths, and additionally I feel like we’re in a position now where technology has broken down the barriers surrounding information dissemination.
We’re still working things out here, but I promise to do my best to serve the FCC community with honesty, integrity and with a strong emphasis placed on the people who are in our community. I’m working to provide a platform to discuss local events, campus policies and other areas that are important to the student body and alumni of FCC.
There are some exciting changes going live on this website today, I’m happy to introduce some new features to make navigation simpler and information accessibility more streamlined. I’m also looking forward to exploring new ways to engage with you all, and am always open for a suggestion. If there is something you want to see here, something you disagree with, or even just something that you would like to discuss, send an email. After all, at the end of the day while I may be the editor, this is your news.
